If you're a parent, it's no doubt one of the easiest times to head to Disney is during the summer months. Kids are out of school, and schedules are more flexible, but we all know that summers in Florida are hot! So, if you're thinking of planning a summer Disney vacation, there are a few extra things you should consider before tackling that extreme Disney summer heat!
Extreme Disney Summer Heat: Insider Tips and Tricks
Drink Lots of Water + Electrolyte Packs
Staying hydrated is so vital in the hot Florida sun. To keep you moving and grooving through the parks, keep that water handy and drink often! You can bring in water bottles or use your refillable Disney mug to easily maintain hydration. This Tervis Water Bottle is one of our favorites! You can add ice and water from your resort at the start of the day and then keep filling it with free water from the quick-service restaurants all day.
Adding electrolyte packs to your water will put back in what you sweat out. I personally use Liquid IV and absolutely love it. It has 3xs the electrolytes of traditional sports drinks and contains 5 essential vitamins, including Vitamins B3, B5, B6, B12, and Vitamin C. It's also gluten-free, soy-free, and dairy-free and tastes fantastic! My personal favorites are the passion fruit, strawberry, and watermelon. Throw a few of these in your park bag and add them to your water throughout the day.
Snack Often
Snacking often will also ensure you maintain the energy to do all your favorite things in the parks. It's common knowledge that extreme heat can affect our appetites and cause us to eat less. But this can negatively affect your blood sugar levels, and a combination of this and dehydration makes you a prime candidate for passing out! On a hot summer day, we all love those special Disney treats like a Mickey Bar or Dole Whip, but you can also bring more substantial snacks in your park bag. Just be sure to bring in ones that won't melt, like chocolate or gummies. My personal favorites are individual bags of popcorn, pretzels, cereal bars, nuts, and chips.
Cooling Towels
Cooling Towels are a fast way to really bring your temperature down. Wet them in the bathroom sink, drape them on your neck (or wherever you are hot), and instantly feel cooled and refreshed.
as you walk through the park. And the great thing is they are entirely reusable day after day! If you haven't used them before, these things are amazing.
Personal Fans
Hand-held fans will provide a fresh breeze to help cool you down as you walk through the Disney theme parks. I LOVE this hand-held one by HandFan. It has three speeds - which will shock you with how much air it produces, and it has a cool-mist option. Hands down the best Disney fan! If you have young kids, bring one that clips to your stroller to provide a nice breeze for even the youngest travelers. I love that all of these fans can be charged through USB chargers, too, so you don't have to remember to pack batteries. Seriously, this is something you can't leave home without.
Avoid Mid-Day Sun
Remember, the mid-day sun is the hottest time of the day. Use this time to take a break in an air-conditioned place. With the price of tickets, it's very tempting to power through the heat to ride as many rides as possible. But this can easily backfire on you and ruin the day. Especially if you have children with you. That "I'm hot, tired, and hungry" meltdown is the worst!
If your child naps, this would be a great time to return to the resort for a short break. As the sun sets and the temperature cools, head back out with your kiddos to enjoy more Disney fun.
If napping isn't in the schedule, try booking a dining reservation for lunch instead of dinner. You can cool off in the air conditioning while eating and recharge your energy. And then hit tons of rides while everyone else sits down for dinner.
Make Use of the Incredible Pools
Disney parks are amazing, but Disney resort pools are just as fun! You can always beat the heat by spending some time cooling off in the water. I always plan an entire day during our vacation to enjoy the pool but if you are traveling in the summer, adding extra pool time is a must. Just don't forget the sunscreen for that bright Florida sun! Resort cast members make pool time tons of fun for your kids with poolside games, music, and more. Each resort will have pool theming specific to that resort and really are just as much fun for the kids as the theme parks. Once you have cooled off in the water, you can head back into the theme parks refreshed to finish your day.
